Overview
The SIST EN 62625-1:2014/A11:2017 standard, titled Electronic railway equipment - On board driving data recording system - Part 1: System specification, is a critical European standard published by CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization). This amendment A11 updates the original 2013 version, focusing on the system specification for on-board driving data recording equipment used in railway transport. It aligns with the EU Directive 2008/57/EC on rail system interoperability and supports harmonization across European rail networks.
The standard ensures that onboard data recording systems comply with stringent requirements related to railway safety, technical compatibility, and interoperability of rolling stock such as locomotives and passenger cars.
Key Topics
Scope and Objectives
Defines specifications for electronic systems that record driving data onboard trains, essential for monitoring operational and safety-critical parameters.System Requirements
Covers technical details about hardware and software aspects of driving data recorders, including data accuracy, robustness, and storage.Compatibility and Interoperability
Addresses technical compatibility with various train subsystems and ensures that systems comply with European rail interoperability standards under Directive 2008/57/EC.Regulatory Compliance
Includes provisions aligned with EU Rail System Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) and mandates compliance with national standards upon adoption.Amendment A11 Updates
Incorporates additional specifications and clarifications approved by CENELEC in 2017 to enhance system reliability and regulatory alignment.
Applications
Rail Safety Monitoring
Enables real-time and post-incident analysis by accurately capturing train operational data, such as speed, braking, and driver inputs.Train Operation Analysis
Facilitates performance monitoring and optimization by railway operators and infrastructure managers.Interoperable Rolling Stock Systems
Assists manufacturers in designing data recording equipment compatible with European cross-border rail networks.Regulatory Compliance Reporting
Ensures onboard systems meet essential requirements for legal and regulatory audits, supporting safer and standardized railway operations across the EU.Incident Investigation
Provides critical data supporting accident investigations and safety improvements in railway operations.
Related Standards
EN 62625 Series
The broader series covers various parts of onboard data recording systems. Part 1 focuses on system specification, complemented by other parts detailing system components and testing methods.EU Directive 2008/57/EC
This Directive on rail system interoperability mandates harmonized technical standards to promote safe and efficient cross-border railway operations.Rail System Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI)
Particularly the Rolling Stock Locomotives and Passenger Rolling Stock TSI that specifies requirements for onboard data recording devices in alignment with EN 62625-1.IEC and CENELEC Standards
Related electrical and electronic standards for railway applications developed by international and European standardization bodies.
This standard is essential for stakeholders in the railway industry such as train manufacturers, operators, safety authorities, and maintenance providers aiming to implement compliant and interoperable onboard driving data recording systems that enhance operational safety and efficiency across Europe’s rail networks.
