Overview
EN 60598-2-3:2003/A1:2011 (IEC 60598-2-3:2002/A1:2011) is the CENELEC amendment that defines particular requirements for luminaires for road and street lighting, including tunnel luminaires. The amendment updates safety, mechanical impact and glass‑cover rules to reduce the risk of injury from breaking glass and to harmonize testing with the IK code (IEC 62262).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Particular requirements for road, street and tunnel luminaires beyond the general EN 60598-1 rules.
- Normative references: Includes IEC 62262 (degrees of protection - IK code) for mechanical impact testing.
- Marking: Manufacturers must declare the maximum mounting height relevant to the chosen method for protection against falling glass particles.
- Glass cover protection (3.6.5):
- For luminaires installed below 5 m, no additional glass requirements apply.
- For luminaires installed above 5 m, glass covers must be:
- a) made of glass that fractures into small pieces (fragmentation test), or
- b) made of high impact‑resistant glass (mechanical impact test), or
- c) protected to retain fragments if breakage occurs (e.g., guard or film).
- The manufacturer must declare which protection method is used.
- Fragmentation test (3.6.5.1):
- Glass is shattered with a centre punch; count particles in a 50 mm square after fracture.
- Compliance: for small‑fragment glass, the count must be more than 40 particles (size < 50 mm).
- High impact resistant glass (3.6.5.2):
- Precondition by thermal endurance (per IEC 60598-1, clause 12.3).
- Impact test per IEC 62262 (pendulum or vertical hammer).
- Compliance: glass must not break at 5 J impact energy (IK08).
- Additional fragmentation requirement: count more than 20 particles in 50 mm square.
- Thermal limits (3.12.3):
- Glass covers must be used within thermal limits declared by the glass manufacturer: minimum/maximum temperatures and maximum Δt allowed.
Applications and users
This standard is essential for:
- Luminaire manufacturers designing road, street and tunnel lighting
- Test laboratories performing mechanical, fragmentation and thermal tests
- Specifiers and procurement teams (municipalities, highway authorities)
- Safety and compliance officers ensuring installations meet mounting‑height and glass‑safety requirements
- Installation contractors verifying marking and product suitability for intended mounting heights
