SIST EN 13536:2004 is the Slovenian adoption of EN 13536:2001 for clothing filled solely with feather and/or down for light use. It specifies the textile fabric characteristics, filling requirements, test methods and labelling for garments intended for urban environments and light leisure activities.
What does SIST EN 13536:2004 specify?
SIST EN 13536:2004 specifies the requirements for the fabrics and filling used in feather- and down-filled clothing for light use. It also sets out how the product is tested, what has to be declared about the filling, and what information must appear on the label.
The standard is organized into Scope, Normative references, Terms and definitions, Requirements, Labelling and Bibliography. Clause 4 is the technical core: it covers fabric performance, filling composition and hygiene, and the behaviour of the finished article after cleaning.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 13536:2004?
SIST EN 13536:2004 requires the outer shell, lining and filling shell fabrics to meet the performance limits in Table 1. That table covers down-proof properties, water repellency and colour fastness to rubbing, washing, perspiration and light. In practice, this is what keeps feathers and down inside the garment and helps the garment keep its appearance during wear and care.
Fabric performance requirements
The fabric requirements are set separately for the outer shell, the lining and the filling shell, including whether the filling shell is in contact with the filling. The standard uses these distinctions because a fabric that is directly in contact with feathers and down has a different risk profile from one that is not. For a buyer or designer, this means the fabric choice must match the garment construction, not just the fabric style.
Filling material requirements
The producer has to declare the composition of the filling material, using sampling and test methods given in EN 1883, EN 12131 and EN 12934. The filling also has to meet the hygiene and cleanliness requirements of EN 12935. In practice, this means the feather/down mix must be identified and controlled, and the filling has to be suitable for use in clothing.
Requirements for washable products
For garments intended to be washed, the standard limits dimensional change after cleaning and requires the water repellency and down-proof performance from Table 1 to be maintained after one cleaning cycle carried out according to the care label. The tests use EN 25077, EN ISO 6330 and EN ISO 3759. This matters because a washable garment must keep its shape and performance after normal laundering.
Requirements for dry-cleanable products
For garments intended to be dry-cleaned, the standard limits dimensional change after one cleaning and requires the water repellency and down-proof performance from Table 1 to be maintained after that cleaning. The relevant methods are EN ISO 3175-1, EN ISO 3175-2 and EN 25077. This tells the supplier and the cleaner what level of stability the garment has to show after dry cleaning.
Labelling
Each product has to show the reference to this standard, the textile fibre composition of the fabrics, the filling composition according to EN 12934, the size, the identification of the trade name or producer or retailer, and care labelling according to EN 23758. For users, that means the garment must carry enough information to identify it and care for it correctly.
What terms does SIST EN 13536:2004 define?
- Clothing for light use - Clothing intended for urban environments and light leisure activities.
- Outer shell - The textile fabric on the outside of the product.
- Filling shell - The textile fabric that encloses the filling; it can also serve as outer shell and/or lining.
- Lining - The textile fabric on the inner side of the product.
- Filling - Feather and/or down contained within the filling shell.
Who uses SIST EN 13536:2004?
SIST EN 13536:2004 is used by manufacturers of feather- and down-filled clothing, textile suppliers, filling suppliers, test laboratories, and quality or purchasing teams. It is relevant when selecting fabrics, verifying filling composition, arranging tests, and preparing product labels for garments intended for light use.
What changed in SIST EN 13536:2004 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 13536:2004 is the Slovenian standard equivalent to EN 13536:2001.

What does the SIST EN 13536:2004 document contain?
The document brings together a performance table for fabrics, methods for checking feather and down composition, and requirements for hygiene and cleanliness. It also sets out the post-cleaning checks for washable and dry-cleanable garments, including dimensional stability and retention of water repellency and down-proof performance.
For product handling and customer information, it specifies the label content and the care-labelling reference. The bibliography points to the textile-names legal background cited by the standard.
