Domestic appliances used for drinking water treatment not connected to water supply - Jug water filter systems - Safety and performance requirements, labeling and information to be supplied
This European Standard describes the specifications and test methods for gravity fed devices for conditioning of drinking water that are not connected to the mains water distribution system in buildings, known as jug water filter systems. It also gives instructions for the user manuals, so that the jug water filter system can be used and maintained properly. Jug water filter systems are intended to modify the properties of drinking water only, and are not designed to make non-potable water safe for drinking. The scope of this document does not extend to combination systems that require an electrical power supply such as water heaters and water coolers systems.
NOTE 1 Although jug water filter systems are covered by the widely harmonized food legislation (EU Regulations 178/2002 and 1935/2004), existing national regulations concerning the use and or the characteristics of these products remain in force
NOTE 2 This standard provides no information as to whether the product is used without restriction in any of the Member States of the EU or EFTA.
Delete Note 3:
"NOTE 3 An amendment is being prepared with the following scope: This Amendment provides a validated test method using Pseudomonas Aeruginosa (ATCC 15442) as a bacterial indicator in addition to the test procedure using E. Coli.".
In NOTE 2, replace "standard" with "document.

Overview
SIST EN 17093:2018/oprA1:2020 is a European standard published by CEN that specifies safety and performance requirements for jug water filter systems-domestic appliances used for drinking water treatment that are not connected to mains water supply. These gravity-fed devices are designed to condition potable water in residential settings without electrical power. The standard also outlines labeling and user information to ensure safe use and proper maintenance.
This document applies exclusively to jug water filter systems intended to improve the properties of drinking water but not to render non-potable water safe for consumption. It excludes any combination systems that require electrical power, such as water heaters or water coolers. While harmonized EU food regulations apply, national rules on product use and characteristics may still govern.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
Defines jug water filter systems as gravity-fed devices for conditioning drinking water not connected to mains supply. Emphasizes that these systems are not for treating non-potable or unsafe water.Safety Requirements
Ensures that materials and construction do not pose health risks or compromise water quality during use.Performance Criteria
Establishes testing methods to confirm filtration effectiveness, durability, and reliable operation under typical household conditions.Labeling and User Information
Sets out requirements for clear product labeling and comprehensive user manuals. This includes instructions on proper use, maintenance, filter replacement guidelines, and manufacturer contact details.Exclusions
Clarifies that electrically powered or combination treatment devices are outside the scope.Regulatory Notes
Highlights compliance with EU food legislation (Regulations 178/2002 and 1935/2004) but notes that national regulations remain applicable. Does not confirm unrestricted product use in all EU or EFTA member states.
Applications
Household Drinking Water Conditioning
Accurately targets use in domestic environments for personal and family consumption.Non-Mains Water Sources
Applicable for use with water supplies unconnected to building infrastructure, such as bottled or stored water needing quality enhancement.Water Quality Improvement
Addresses modification of taste, odor, chlorine levels, and sediment through filtration without electrical input.Consumer Safety Assurance
Helps manufacturers design products that meet rigorous health and safety criteria, enhancing consumer confidence.Instructional Clarity
Improves end-user experience via standardized user manuals covering installation, operation, and maintenance.
