Leisure accommodation vehicles - 12 V direct current extra low voltage electrical installations - Part 2: Motor caravans

This European Standard specifies safety, health and functional requirements for 12 V direct current (DC) extra low voltage (ELV) electrical installations for habitation aspects of motor caravans.
It applies only to installations which are electrically connected with the electrical installation of the base vehicle or which can be electrically connected with it by means of change-over devices.
This European Standard also specifies the ELV output requirements of low voltage (LV) equipment that may be used to provide an ELV supply but it does not specify safety, technical and functional requirements for LV appliances and installations. Requirements for LV installations are specified in HD 60364 7 721.

Diese Europäische Norm legt die sicherheitstechnischen, gesundheitlichen und funktionellen Anforderungen an elektrische Kleinspannungsanlagen (en: extra low voltage, ELV) DC 12 V im Wohnbereich von Motorcara¬vans fest.
Sie gilt ausschließlich für Anlagen, die mit der elektrischen Anlage des Basisfahrzeugs galvanisch verbunden sind oder durch Umschalteinrichtungen galvanisch damit verbunden werden können.
Diese Europäische Norm legt auch die Anforderungen an die Kleinspannungsleistungsabgabe von Nieder-spannungs (LV )Geräten fest, die benutzt werden dürfen, um eine Kleinspannungsversorgung zu sichern, aber sie legt nicht die Sicherheitsanforderungen, technischen und funktionellen Anforderungen an Niederspannungsgeräte und  anlagen fest. Anforderungen an Niederspannungsanlagen sind in HD 60364-7-721 festgelegt.

La présente Norme européenne spécifie les exigences en matière de sécurité, de santé et de fonctionnement s’appliquant aux installations électriques à très basse tension (TBT) de 12 V en courant continu (CC) utilisées dans la partie habitable des autocaravanes.
Elle ne s’applique qu’aux installations électriques reliées à l’installation électrique du véhicule de base ou qui peuvent y être reliées par l’intermédiaire de dispositifs de couplage.
La présente Norme européenne spécifie également les caractéristiques de sortie TBT des équipements basse tension (BT) pouvant être utilisés pour fournir une alimentation TBT, mais n’impose pas d’exigences en matière de sécurité ou de caractéristiques techniques et fonctionnelles s’appliquant aux appareils et installations BT. Les exigences relatives aux installations BT sont spécifiées dans la norme HD 60364-7-721.

Overview

EN 1648-2:2018 is the CEN European standard that sets safety, health and functional requirements for 12 V direct current (DC) extra low voltage (ELV) electrical installations used in the habitation areas of motor caravans. It applies where the habitation electrical system is electrically connected to the base vehicle installation (or can be by change‑over devices). The standard defines supply limits (nominal 12 V, 11–15 V range), minimum auxiliary battery capacity and installation, wiring, overcurrent protection and user information requirements for safe 12 V DC systems in motor caravans.

Key topics and technical requirements

• Voltage and supply: Nominal DC 12 V supply (minimum 11 V, maximum 15 V). ELV outputs from LV equipment are covered only as ELV supplies; LV appliance requirements are not specified by this document.
• Auxiliary battery:
  • Rechargeable type intended for habitation circuits only.
  • Minimum capacity: 60 Ah at 20 h discharge rate.
  • Terminals must be clearly marked “+” and “–” and securely clamped/bolted.
  • Location: installed in a protected compartment or specified position with easy access and secured against movement.
  • If underslung, follow vehicle regulations for ground clearance (see Directive 2007/46/EC).
• Battery compartment and ventilation:
  • Electrolyte‑resistant tray required where electrolyte can flow; tray must hold at least 20% of the electrolyte capacity of the recommended battery.
  • Compartments must be ventilated and sealed to prevent corrosive gas ingress to habitable areas; minimum low‑level ventilation of 80 mm² (standard gives further ventilation and construction details).
• Wiring and cable requirements:
  • Minimum cross‑section rules and cable types specified; Annex A provides graphs and calculation methods relating cable cross‑section, current and length.
  • Requirements for cable supports, connections and auxiliary battery cabling.
• Overcurrent protection:
  • Protection of positive conductors, acceptable types of devices (fuses/circuit breakers), installation and prohibited locations are defined.
• Appliance installation and chargers:
  • Selection/connection rules for 12 V appliances, socket outlets, battery chargers and voltage‑drop considerations.
• User documentation:
  • A user’s handbook is required, including instructions where an auxiliary battery is intended but not provided, and installation guidance.
