ISO/TC 149 - Cycles

This document specifies safety and performance requirements for the design, marking, assembly, and testing of two wheeled electrically power assisted cycles (hereafter EPACs), fully-assembled EPACs and subassemblies, and provides guidelines for information supplied by the manufacturers (i.e. instructions on the use and care of such EPACs). This document applies to two wheeled EPACs that have a maximum saddle height of 635 mm or more and are intended for private and commercial use with exception of EPACs intended for hire from unattended stations. This document is intended to cover all common significant hazards, hazardous situations and events listed in 5.3 of EPACs, when used as intended or under conditions of misuse that are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer. This document specifies requirements and test methods for engine power management systems, electrical circuits including the charger for the assessment of the design and assembly of EPACs and sub-assemblies for systems having a Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV) maximum voltage up to 60 V d.c. including tolerances.

This document defines a description of common terms and symbols used in the field of bicycles and two wheeled Electric Power Assisted Cycles (EPACs). The terms are classified under a nomenclature of different parts of bicycles and two wheeled EPACs, and presented in several languages.

ISO 6699:2016 specifies the dimensions and tolerances to ensure secure assembly between the stem and the handlebar centre of a bicycle. It is applicable for bicycles intended for use on public roads, and on which the saddle can be adjusted to provide a saddle height of 635 mm or more. It is not applicable for specialized types of bicycle, such as tradesmen's delivery bicycles, tandems, toy bicycles and bicycles designed and equipped for use in sanctioned competitive events.

ISO 11243:2016 specifies safety and performance requirements for the design and testing of luggage carriers intended for mounting (with or without tool) above and adjacent to the wheels of cycles and lays down guide lines for instructions on the use and care of such luggage carriers. It does not apply to removable luggage (for example, handlebar bags or baskets that are not permanently attached). Toy carrier intended to be mounted on bicycles for young children in the scope of ISO 8098 are not covered by ISO 11243:2016.

ISO 6695:2015 specifies the dimensions for the assembly of cranks on bottom bracket spindles with square end fittings.

ISO 14878:2015 lays down the technical specifications, such as the sound pressure level and the durability, and specifies the corresponding test method for audible warning devices (AWD) which may be fitted to cycles. ISO 14878:2015 applies to all types of audible warning devices (AWD) for use on bicycles.

ISO 4210-2:2015 specifies safety and performance requirements for the design, assembly, and testing of bicycles and sub-assemblies having saddle height as given in Table 1, and lays down guidelines for manufacturer's instructions on the use and care of such bicycles. This part of ISO 4210 applies to young adult bicycles with maximum saddle height of 635 mm or more and less than 750 mm, city and trekking bicycles, mountain bicycles, and racing bicycles that have a maximum saddle height of 635 mm or more including folding bicycles (see Table 1 and Figure 1). This part of ISO 4210 does not apply to specialized types of bicycle, such as delivery bicycles, recumbent bicycles, tandems, BMX bicycles, and bicycles designed and equipped for use in severe applications such as sanctioned competition events, stunting, or aerobatic manoeuvres. NOTE For bicycles with a maximum saddle height of 435 mm or less, see ISO 8124‑1, and with a maximum saddle height of more than 435 mm and less than 635 mm, see ISO 8098.

ISO 4210-6:2015 specifies the frame and fork test methods for ISO 4210‑2.

ISO 6742-4:2015 is applicable to lighting systems used on cycles intended to be used on public roads and, especially, bicycles complying with ISO 4210 and ISO 8098. ISO 6742-4:2015 specifies requirements and test methods for the performance of lighting systems powered by the cycle's movement. It applies to light devices complying with ISO 6742‑1. Lighting systems include lighting devices and power supplied by cycle's movement such as generator.

ISO 6742-5:2015 is applicable to lighting systems used on cycles intended to be used on public roads and, especially, bicycles complying with ISO 4210 and ISO 8098. ISO 6742-5:2015 specifies requirements and test methods for the performance of lighting systems not powered by the cycle's movement. It applies to light devices complying with ISO 6742‑1. Lighting systems include lighting devices and power not supplied by cycle's movement such as battery.

ISO 6742-2:2015 is applicable to retro-reflective devices used on cycles intended to be used on public roads and, especially, bicycles complying with ISO 4210 and ISO 8098. ISO 6742-2:2015 specifies photometric and physical requirements of retro-reflective devices.

ISO 6742-3:2015 is applicable to lighting and retro-reflective devices used on cycles intended to be used on public roads and, especially, bicycles complying with ISO 4210 and ISO 8098. ISO 6742-3:2015 specifies the safety requirements and test methods of lighting and retro-reflective devices for fastening devices, control, (guidelines for maintenance), instructions for mounting and use.

ISO 6742-1:2015 is applicable to lighting devices used on cycles intended to be used on public roads and, especially, bicycles complying with ISO 4210 and ISO 8098. ISO 6742-1:2015 specifies the functions, safety requirements, photometric performance and test methods of lighting and signalling devices that can be used on cycles.

ISO 4210-4:2014 specifies the braking test methods for ISO 4210‑2.

ISO 4210-1:2014 specifies terms and definitions related to safety and performance requirements for the design, assembly, and testing of bicycles and sub-assemblies having saddle height as given in Table 1.

ISO 4210-3:2014 specifies the common test methods for ISO 4210‑2.

ISO 4210-9:2014 specifies saddle and seat-post test methods for ISO 4210‑2.

ISO 4210-7:2014 specifies wheel and rim test methods for ISO 4210‑2.

ISO 4210-5:2014 specifies the steering test methods for ISO 4210‑2.

ISO 4210-8:2014 specifies pedal and drive system test methods for ISO 4210‑2.

ISO 8098:2014 specifies safety and performance requirements and test methods for the design, assembly and testing of fully assembled bicycles and sub-assemblies for young children. It also provides guidelines for instructions on the use and care of the bicycles. ISO 8098:2014 is applicable to bicycles with a maximum saddle height of more than 435 mm and less than 635 mm, propelled by a transmitted drive to the rear wheel. ISO 8098:2014 is not applicable to special bicycles intended for performing stunts (e.g. BMX bicycles).

Gives the main dimensions for hubs and freewheels, including single-speed coaster brake hubs and multispeed gear hubs, to ensure assembly and interchangeability.

Applies to round or flat head spoke nipples. Specifies external dimensions and their tolerances and the designation. Values are given for four wire diameters.

Specifies mating dimensions and tolerances for the sprocket and splines of the hub of an internally geared hub or a backpedal brake hub on a cycle. The dimensions and tolerances for the fitting shall be as given in figure 1.

Specifies the thread profile and limits and tolerances for the screw threads used to assemble bottom bracket cups to bottom brackets on bicycles. It is based on the use of the ISO basic thread profile, satisfactory interchangeability with the corresponding B.S.C. thread, the use of screw thread tolerance grades and tolerance positions and the use of gauges made to ISO 1502.

Specifies the thread profile and limits and tolerances for the screw threads used to assemble freewheels on bicycle hubs. Based on the use of the ISO basic thread profile, satisfactory interchangeability with the corresponding B.S.C. thread, the use of screw thread tolerance grades and tolerance positions and the use of gauges made to ISO 1502.

Specifies details of the screw threads used to assemble heads, i.d. fittings, on bicycle fork steering columns. The basic thread profile is that of ISO 68; the tolerance grades and tolerance positions are in accordance with ISO 965-1; the gauging system is that specified in ISO 1502. These threads are interchangeable with the corresponding B.S.C. thread.

Specifies the marking system recommended to the manufacturer so as to reduce risks of incompatibility between components of bicycles produced according to new ISO Standards and traditional components. This problem of selection of the appropriate component will make itself felt above all at the level of the repair of bicycles and the distribution of spare parts; it will be necessary for this distinguishing mark to be universal, standardized and practical.

ISO 4210-6:2014 specifies the frame and fork test methods for ISO 4210‑2.

ISO 4210-2:2014 specifies safety and performance requirements for the design, assembly, and testing of bicycles and sub-assemblies having saddle height as given in Table 1, and lays down guidelines for manufacturer's instructions on the use and care of such bicycles. ISO 4210-2:2014 applies to young adult bicycles with maximum saddle height of 635 mm or more and less than 750 mm, city and trekking bicycles, mountain bicycles, and racing bicycles that have a maximum saddle height of 635 mm or more including folding bicycles.

This International Standard specifies safety and performance requirements and test methods for the design, assembly and testing of bicycles for young children of from about four to eight years of age and these bicycles' sub-assemblies. It also provides guidelines for instructions on the use and care of the bicycles. This International Standard is applicable to bicycles with a maximum saddle height of more than 435 mm and less than 635 mm propelled by a transmitted drive to the rear wheel. It is not applicable to special bicycles intended for stunting (e.g. BMX bicycles).

Specifies safety and performance requirements for the design, assembly and testing of bicycles. Contains guidelines for instructions on the use and care of bicycles. Does not apply to special types of bicycles such as tandems, toy bicycles etc..

Specifies dimensions and performance requirements for luggage carriers intended for mounting above the rear wheels of bicycles.

Replaces subclause 2.2.1.1, amends subclause 2.3.1, and adds new subclauses 2.6.4 (Wheel retention) and 2.6.5 (Quick-release axle mechanisms).

Gives the dimensions for the assembly of cranks on bottom bracket pedal axles with square end fittings. Dimensions for the assembly of cranks on bottom bracket pedal axles with square end fittings shall be as given in the figure and the table.

Gives the dimensions and tolerances to ensure secure assembly between the stem and the handlebar bend. Applies to bicycles intended for use on public roads, and on which the saddle can be adjusted to provide a saddle height of 635 mm or more. Does not apply to specialized types of bicycle such as trademen's delivery bicycles, tandems, toy bicycles and bicycles designed and equipped for use in sanctioned competitive events.

Specifies for bicycles for young children safety and performance requirements concerning design, assembly and testing of bicycles and bicycles components. Gives guides for their use and maintenance. Applies to bicycles having a saddle height between 435 mm and 635 mm maximum, and a transmitted drive to the rear wheel. Applies to the specified bicycles whether having supporting wheels or not.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 6742-1 : 1985), incorporating draft Amendment ISO 6742-1/DAM 1 : 1985. Constitutes a revision of some clauses. Includes a new definition 4.12 and some new methodes, and marking requirements. Applies to lighting equipment for use on cycles intended to be used on public roads.

This part of ISO 6742 specifies general requirements for retro-reflective devices for fitting to cycles intended to be used on public roads. Such retro-reflective devices are effective in conditions of poor visibility and at night in helping to make all road users aware of the presence of a cyclist.

Specifies the dimensions and tolerances of the cotter pin and the assembly of the axle/cotter pin/crank. Applies to the fastening of the pedal on the pedal axle.
