ISO/TC 5/SC 2 - Cast iron pipes, fittings and their joints
Tuyaux en fonte, raccords et leurs joints
General Information
This document provides details about the aggressiveness factors, evaluation indicators of raw water, or inlet water of ductile iron pipe system and relevant lining information applicable to ductile iron pipes, fittings and accessories used in water mains and distribution system. This document is intended to serve as a tool for estimating the properties of certain water and their effect on internal linings of ductile iron pipes, fittings and accessories used in water mains and distribution system which are specified in ISO 2531, ISO 16631 and can be used to decide the most appropriate protective measures to ensure long term durability of pipeline. It is not always possible to definitively determine the aggressive parameters of certain water, and fully considered by limited test and evaluation. Therefore, the history information of the evaluated water, experiences of local water works can be taken for reference. The aggressiveness evaluation of water can be carried out before determining the internal lining materials of certain pipeline, and the evaluation and relevant tests can be done by qualified laboratories and engineers. Water that leads to high-level scaling in the pipeline is believed aggressive. Drainage and waste water are not in the scope of this document, the internal protection of drainage and waste water can be recommended by pipe suppliers.

This document specifies a computation method used to determine the length of the ductile iron pipes to be restrained, when used for conveying raw water, drinking water, sewerage under pressure. This computation method takes into account all common pipeline route changes, including changes in the diameter of the pipeline itself and dead ends at the extremity of the pipeline, the outside diameter of the pipe, the system test pressure (to estimate the thrust), depth of cover, the characteristics of the soil surrounding the pipe and trench backfilling methods for a worldwide usage. The characteristics of the restrained joint are not covered by this document but can also be considered to determine the restraining length using any appropriate method. The computation method defined in this document is applicable to all types of restrained joint systems, with their operating pressure ratings of ductile iron pipelines complying with ISO 2531, ISO 7186 and ISO 16631. NOTE 1 ISO 10804 deals with actual design of the joint for various operating pressures of the pipeline. NOTE 2 National standards or established calculation methods can be used instead of this ISO standard.

This document specifies the evaluation method of life cycle analysis of ductile iron pipes used for water applications as specified in ISO 2531 and ISO 16631. Studies on economic and environmental impacts are important for utility decision-makers as they seek to balance budget concerns over immediate and long-term needs across acquisition, operations and maintenance, and planned end of life. For authorities and engineers designing pipeline systems, the life cycle cost analysis serves as a tool to study various scenarios to determine the right solution for site-specific conditions and community values, as well as to provide the necessary data to support those decisions. Informative annexes are included in this document as a compilation of reference and consensual factors (pumping cost, leakage incident rate, etc.).
