Overview
EN 361:2002 is the CEN (European Committee for Standardization) European Standard for personal protective equipment against falls from a height - full body harnesses. It specifies essential requirements, test methods, marking, information supplied by the manufacturer, and packaging for full body harnesses used in fall arrest systems. The standard supports EU Directive 89/686/EEC and is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories, certifiers, safety managers and buyers of PPE.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Requirements for full body harnesses; other body supports (EN 358, EN 813, EN 1497) may be incorporated. Fall arrest systems are covered by EN 363.
- Materials & construction:
- Webbing and sewing threads must be virgin filament or multifilament synthetic fibres.
- Breaking tenacity of fibres: at least 0.6 N/tex.
- Threads for sewing must be compatible and of a contrasting colour for inspection.
- Primary strap width ≥ 40 mm; secondary straps ≥ 20 mm.
- Design & ergonomics: Harness shall fit the wearer, prevent strap migration, allow visual inspection even if integrated into garments, and ensure correct buckle assembly.
- Static strength: Harness must not release a torso dummy when tested at each attachment with 15 kN and 10 kN loads (per referenced EN 364 procedures).
- Dynamic performance:
- Two successive drop tests at each fall-arrest attachment using a 100 kg torso dummy and 4 m adjusted free-fall (one feet-first, one head-first).
- After arrest the torso dummy must be held in a head-up position with a maximum tilt of 50°.
- Mountaineering rope used in testing must conform to EN 892 (impact force ~9 ± 1.5 kN).
- Marking: Must include the EN 361 number, model/type ID, a pictogram to read manufacturer information, and a capital “A” at each fall arrest attachment.
- Manufacturer information: Comprehensive instructions including correct donning, anchor characteristics, connection guidance, material limitations (temperature, chemicals, abrasion, UV), rescue considerations, cleaning/disinfection, and expected lifespan.
- Packaging: Supplied wrapped in material offering some resistance to moisture.
Applications and users
EN 361:2002 is applied where reliable fall arrest is required:
- Construction, roofing, scaffolding and maintenance
- Rope access, window cleaning, tower work and wind energy
- Rescue services and industrial confined-space work
- PPE manufacturers, conformity assessors, procurement officers and safety officers selecting and specifying harnesses
