Overview - EN 16507:2014 (CEN)
EN 16507:2014, published by CEN, specifies interface and safety requirements for ground-based diesel refuelling equipment for railway vehicles. The standard covers vehicle fittings and fixed fuelling points intended to refuel locomotives, multiple units and other rolling stock fitted with diesel power units using fuels compliant with Directive 2009/30/EC. It does not apply to mobile or temporary refuelling points.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Vehicle interface: Each vehicle must have at least one circular refuelling opening (maximum height 1 500 mm above rail, minimum diameter 70 mm), sealing cover operable by hand, fuel level indicators on both sides (sight glasses not permitted) and clear marking per EN 15877-2.
- Tank and ventilation: Tanks and pipework must resist chemical attack by fuels in Directive 2009/30/EC, prevent surge/overflow and provide independent ventilation so filling can continue up to 90% tank level without premature shut-off.
- Fixed fuelling equipment:
- Nozzle: Flexible supply hose fitted with a Type II nozzle compliant with EN 13012; spout dimensions specified (170–280 mm length, 30–45 mm outer diameter).
- Breakaway coupling: Supply hose must include a breakaway coupling meeting EN 13617-2 to avoid spillage if movement occurs during refuelling.
- Flow rate: Each supply device shall deliver between 80 and 200 L/min.
- Refuelling apron: Impermeable apron with containment of 110% of potential spillage and drainage via an appropriate oil interceptor. Cleaning instructions and restrictions (e.g., avoid emulsifying chemicals; water <60 °C and <60 bar) are required.
- Information & maintenance: Operating and maintenance instructions are mandatory for vehicles and fixed installations to prevent leaks and ensure safe operation.
- National variants: Annex A records special national conditions (e.g., Great Britain BS 3818 compatibility; France aprons per Arrêté n°1435).
Practical applications and users
EN 16507:2014 is intended for:
- Railway infrastructure owners and depot designers specifying fixed refuelling points
