Hot rolled spring steel flat bars - Part 1: Flat bars - Dimensions and tolerances on shape and dimensions

This Part of this European Standard specifies the nominal dimensions and the tolerances on dimensions and shape of hot rolled steel flat bars for springs with three different types of profiles (A, B, and C). Formulas for calculation the moment of inertia are specified in annex A.
This standard is applicable only to spring steel flat bars produced from steel grades specified in EN 10089.

Overview

EN 10092-1:2003 (CEN) is the European standard that defines the nominal dimensions and tolerances on shape and dimensions for hot rolled spring steel flat bars. This Part 1 applies to flat bars intended for springs and covers three defined profile types: A, B and C. The standard also includes calculation formulas for the moment of inertia (Annex A) and is applicable only to spring steel flat bars manufactured from the steel grades given in EN 10089.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability
    • Defines the products covered: hot rolled spring steel flat bars for springs.
    • Restricts application to steels listed in EN 10089.
  • Nominal dimensions
    • Specifies how nominal widths and thicknesses of flat bars are presented and referenced.
  • Tolerances on dimensions
    • Gives permitted deviations from nominal sizes to ensure interchangeability and quality control.
  • Shape tolerances
    • Covers permissible variations in straightness, twist and other geometric form characteristics relevant to spring performance.
  • Profiles A, B and C
    • Recognizes three profile types (A, B, C); each profile addresses specific geometric or manufacturing characteristics relevant to different spring designs.
  • Annex A - Moment of inertia
    • Provides formulas for calculating moment of inertia of the flat bar cross-sections, useful for stiffness and deflection calculations.

Applications

EN 10092-1:2003 is directly useful wherever spring flat bars are specified, manufactured, inspected or used:

  • Design engineers calculating spring stiffness, deflection and fatigue life (using moment of inertia formulas).
  • Manufacturers of leaf springs, flat spring components, clips, and other strip-based spring parts who need to meet standardized dimensional and shape tolerances.
  • Quality and inspection teams verifying supplier deliveries against prescribed dimensional and shape tolerances.
  • Procurement and specification writers who need a clear, standardized reference for purchasing spring steel flat bars.
  • Automotive, railway and industrial spring producers where consistency in flat bar geometry affects assembly, performance and safety.

Related Standards

  • EN 10089 - Defines the spring steel grades to which EN 10092-1:2003 applies.
  • CEN framework: EN 10092-1 is a CEN technical specification within the suite of European standards for steel products.

This standard is essential when specifying or verifying hot rolled spring steel flat bars, ensuring consistent dimensions, acceptable shape tolerances and reliable mechanical behaviour in spring applications.
