Overview

EN 14973:2015 - "Conveyor belts for use in underground installations - Electrical and flammability safety requirements" is a CEN standard that specifies electrical and fire-safety requirements for conveyor belts used in underground environments (including potentially flammable atmospheres). It defines hazard assessment procedures and classifies belts into safety Classes A, B (B1/B2) and C (C1/C2) depending on access, presence of explosive atmospheres, combustible dust/materials and whether secondary safety devices are provided. The standard is a type C machinery-related standard and links to EU directives via informative annexes.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Ignition hazard assessment - Operating companies must carry out an ignition hazard assessment to determine which belt class is required; Annex A and example Annex B provide guidance.
  • Classification - Three main classes:
    • Class A: general use (limited escape/access hazards).
    • Class B: potentially explosive atmosphere (B1 without secondary safety devices; B2 with devices).
    • Class C: potentially explosive atmosphere plus additional combustible dust/material or fire load (C1 without devices; C2 with devices).
  • Electrical safety - Belts intended for underground use must meet electrical surface conductivity/resistance requirements (test methods referenced in EN ISO 284).
  • Frictional heating - Drum friction tests (EN 1554) specify behaviour limits:
    • For B1 belts: no flame or glow and drum temperature must not exceed 450 °C.
    • For C1 belts (coal-dust environments): no flame or glow and drum temperature must not exceed 325 °C.
    • For A, B2, C2: glowing permitted but no flame in specified tests.
  • Resistance to ignition and fire propagation - Requirements and test procedures (propane burner tests, double-burner, mid-scale high-energy tests). A laboratory-scale alternative (Method D) was added to allow substitution of a full-scale test for defined belt ranges.
  • Marking and documentation - Marking, classification and supporting test evidence are required; Annex C suggests approval/compliance options.

Applications and who uses it

  • Mining and underground operators selecting conveyor belts for shafts, galleries and tunnels.
  • Conveyor-belt manufacturers and designers developing products for underground use.
  • Safety engineers, risk assessors and maintenance teams responsible for fire and explosion safety.
  • Certification bodies and regulators assessing compliance with EU directives for equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Related standards (selection)

u r r M Àä 6 Frictional heating 6.1 Conveyor belts intended for general use in underground installations (Class A), and for use in hazardous installations where secondary safety devices are present (Classes B2 and C2) When tested in accordance with EN 1554:2012, Method B2, or Method B1 if the use of Method B2 is impossible, e.g. when testing steel cord conveyor belts, conveyor belts intended for use in these applications shall exhibit no flame whatsoever, although glowing is permissible. No requirements are included for the maximum temperature of the drum. 6.2 Conveyor belts intended for use in installations where there is a potentially flammable atmosphere and where secondary safety devices are not present (Class B1) When tested in accordance with EN 1554:2012, Method B2, or Method B1 if the use of Method B2 is impossible, e.g. when testing steel cord conveyor belts, conveyor belts intended for use in flammable atmospheres shall exhibit no flame or glow whatsoever and at no time shall the temperature of the drum exceed 450 °C. NOTE If the intrinsic properties of the conveyor belt alone are to be used to give a safe situation in the presence of flammable atmospheres, it is important to limit the temperature of the drum and not to allow glow. The temperature of 450 °C was chosen as being adequately below the ignition temperature of methane-air mixtures when in the presence of a hot drum surface. SIST EN 14973:2016

The article suggests that the revision of EN 14973, which discusses safety requirements for conveyor belts used in underground installations, should be undertaken to align it with the revised EN 12881-1 and EN 12881-2. Experts agree that an annex should be included in EN 14973 to address the possibility of family approval for belts. Furthermore, a general revision of EN 14973 and EN 12882 is deemed necessary due to ongoing work on EN 12881-1 and EN 12881-2.
