Overview

EN 50428:2005/A2:2009 (CENELEC) is an amendment to the European collateral standard EN 50428 for switches and related accessories used in home and building electronic systems (HBES). Approved 2009-06-01, the amendment updates test, insulation and EMC requirements specific to electronic switches intended for household and similar fixed electrical installations. It applies where HBES devices interface with building automation and residential control systems.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Scope: Collateral standard for switches for household and similar fixed electrical installations, focused on HBES components and accessories.
  • Durability / Mechanical endurance: Electronic HBES switches are tested at rated voltage and loaded per Clause 17; for HBES switches designed for heating installations the manufacturer must declare a minimum of 200,000 operations and specify the load.
  • Creepage, clearance and insulation:
    • Addresses clearances for basic, double and reinforced insulation between circuits.
    • Allows reduced clearance values (for impulse withstand voltage > 800 V) if parts are rigid/moulded, or distances cannot be reduced in normal use, provided minimum clearances from the standard (Table 204) are met and verification includes the impulse voltage dielectric test in accordance with EN 60664-1.
  • EMC and surge immunity:
    • Adds EMC-related test set-ups (Annex CC) for HBES switches using TP‑Media.
    • Specifies surge immunity testing for 1.2/50 µs impulses with arrangements for line-to-earth testing; where no earth terminal exists, each load terminal is connected via a 3.3 nF capacitor to earth and the Equipment Under Test (EUT) is placed on a copper plane tied to generator earth.
  • Test referencing and implementation:
    • The amendment modifies clauses in Part 2-1 and defines national implementation dates (dop 2010-06-01, dow 2012-06-01).

Applications and Who Uses It

  • Manufacturers of HBES switches and related accessories - to design products that meet European safety, insulation and EMC requirements.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform compliance testing (endurance, dielectric, surge immunity, EMC).
  • Building automation designers, system integrators and installers - to select compliant switches for smart-home and building-control installations, including heating control.
  • Regulatory and standards committees - to harmonize national standards with the CENELEC amendment.

Related Standards

  • EN 50428:2005 (base standard) - Part 2-1 references and tests
  • EN 60664-1 - impulse voltage dielectric testing and insulation coordination
