Wallcoverings - Vocabulary and symbols

This document defines terms of interest to the users of wallcoverings that are supplied in roll form for hanging on to walls and ceilings by means of an adhesive.
This document also provides the necessary definitions and symbols for the purposes of other European Standards for wallcoverings (see references in 3.1).
Table 1 gives the symbols to be used.

Dieses Dokument legt Begriffe fest, die für die Verwender von Wandbekleidungen, welche in Rollenform geliefert und an Wänden und Decken mit einem Klebstoff angebracht werden, von Bedeutung sind.
Dieses Dokument enthält auch die notwendigen Definitionen und Piktogramme für die Anwendung in anderen Europäischen Normen über Wandbekleidungen (siehe Verweisungen in 3.1).
Tabelle 1 enthält die zu verwendenden Piktogramme.

This document (EN 235:2020) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 99 “Wallcoverings”,
the secretariat of which is held by AFNOR.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by November 2020, and conflicting national standards shall
be withdrawn at the latest by November 2020.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. CEN shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
This document supersedes EN 235:2001.
The significant technical changes between this document and the previous edition EN 235:2001 are:

1 Scope
This document defines terms of interest to the users of wallcoverings that are supplied in roll form for
hanging on to walls and ceilings by means of an adhesive.
This document also provides the necessary definitions and symbols for the purposes of other European
Standards for wallcoverings (see references in 3.1).
Table 1 gives the symbols to be used.

Note 1 to entry: The appropriate symbols to indicate methods of application are serial numbers 5.1 to 5.3 of
Table 1. Where the methods of application require to be combined, the necessary symbols from Table 1 should be
used together, separated by a + sign of equivalent size to the symbols.

method by which the edges of adjoining lengths of wallcovering can be made to butt together
Note to entry 1: The adjoining edges of adjacent lengths of wallcovering are overlapped on the support during
application and both thicknesses are cut through in a continuous movement with a sharp knife. The joint is opened
and surplus wallcovering material removed before the adjoining edges are realigned.
Note 2 to entry: The appropriate symbol to indicate advice to overlap and double cut is serial number 7.1 of
Table 1.
