Overview

SIST EN 1744-1:2010+A1:2013 - Tests for chemical properties of aggregates (Part 1: Chemical analysis) is a European standard that specifies reference procedures and accepted alternative methods for the chemical analysis of aggregates. It covers sampling, preparation of test portions, reagents, apparatus, test procedures and expression of results for a range of chemical determinations. The standard is intended for type testing and dispute resolution (reference methods mandatory) and can also be used for factory production control, audit tests or routine testing where an appropriate relationship to the reference method has been established.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and application: Defines when reference vs. alternative methods must be used (type testing/dispute vs. factory production control).
  • Reagents and apparatus: Lists required chemicals and laboratory equipment specific to each chemical test.
  • Sampling and sample preparation: Procedures for representative sampling, drying and extraction of aggregates prior to analysis.
  • Chloride determination: Water-soluble chloride methods including the Volhard (reference) method, potentiometric (alternative) and Mohr (factory control) method.
  • Sulfate and sulfur tests: Water-soluble sulfates, acid-soluble sulfates, total sulfur (acid digestion reference and high-temperature combustion alternative).
  • Sulfide determination: Acid-soluble sulfide content and procedures to detect potentially reactive sulfide particles.
  • Organic and contaminant tests: Tests for humus, fulvo acids, organic contaminants and lightweight contaminators that affect concrete surface finish.
  • Free lime and slag assessments: Methods for free CaO determination (complexometry, conductometry, acidimetry) and procedures for assessing expansion potential of steel and blast-furnace slags.
  • Quality aspects: Repeatability/reproducibility, expression of mass/volume, treatment of results and special checks (e.g., AgNO3 chloride absence test).

Practical applications and who uses it

  • Aggregate producers and quarry operators: To validate product quality and demonstrate compliance with chemical acceptance criteria.
  • Construction material laboratories and testing facilities: For type testing, dispute resolution and establishing factory production control methods referenced to the standard.
  • Civil and structural engineers, specifiers and contractors: To assess suitability of aggregates for concrete and asphalt, mitigating risks from chlorides, sulfates, sulfides, free lime or deleterious organics.
  • Regulators and certification bodies: For conformity assessment, audits and standardised reporting of chemical properties.
