Overview

EN 61360-1:2017 (IEC 61360-1:2017) defines principles and methods for standard data element types and an associated classification scheme for electrotechnical and related domains. The fourth edition updates the IEC 61360 dictionary model and explains how verbally defined technical concepts are represented as data constructs (with implementation guidance referenced in IEC 61360-2). It also specifies principles for building hierarchical classification systems from collections of classes that represent technical concepts.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of properties and attributes: Principles for specifying semantic, identifying and administrative attributes for data elements (see sections on Property, Identifying_attributes, Semantic_attributes, Administrative_attributes).
  • Representation methods: Guidance on mapping verbal concepts to data constructs defined in IEC 61360-2 (data element types, units, enumerations).
  • Advanced constructs supported: Conditions and constraints, blocks, cardinality, polymorphism, generic/restricted enumerations, and mapping - enabling richer metadata modelling for complex components.
  • Extended data types: An expanded list of simple and aggregate data types, class references, large objects and placement types for product metadata.
  • Harmonization and interoperability: Alignment with IEC 62656-1 (product ontology register), support for IEC TS 62720 (units identification) and coded units, and harmonized semantic/administrative metadata across information objects.
  • Modeling tools: Use of UML for data modelling and illustrative examples of higher-level constructs (blocks, cardinality, polymorphism) to guide implementers.
  • Metadata governance: Attributes for versioning, revision, status, provenance and dictionary identification to support metadata registries and lifecycle management.

Applications and who uses it

EN/IEC 61360-1 is used where consistent, machine-readable product and component metadata is required:

  • Product data dictionaries and metadata registries for electrical and electromechanical components
  • Part libraries, PLM/ERP integration and data exchange between CAD/CAE and manufacturing systems
  • Creation of semantic classification schemes for catalogs and e-commerce of electrical items
  • Systems integration and interoperability (OEMs, suppliers, system integrators) Primary users include electrical engineers, data architects, product managers, standards developers, and software vendors building product information systems or ontologies.

Related standards

  • IEC 61360-2 (data element types - implementation formats)
  • IEC 62656-1 (product ontology register and spreadsheets)
  • IEC TS 62720 (identification of units for computer processing)
  • ISO 80000 series (quantities and units), ISO 3166 (country codes), ISO/IEC 11179 (metadata registries)

Keywords: IEC 61360, EN 61360-1:2017, data element types, classification scheme, electrotechnical metadata, product ontology, UML, units of measure, metadata registry, semantic attributes.
