LUMINAIRES
Part 2: Particular requirements
Section Seventeen — Luminaires for stage lighting, television and film
studios (outdoor and indoor)
17.1 Scope
This section of Pa rt 2 of I EC Publication 598 specifies requirements for stage, television and film
studio luminaires (including spot and floodlighting projectors), for use with tungsten filament,
tubular fluorescent and other discharge lamps on supply voltages not exceeding 1 000 V. It is to be

naires.
17.2 General test requirements
The provisions of Section Zero of Publication 598-1 apply. The tests described in each appro-
priate section of Pa rt 1 shall be carried out in the order listed in this section of Pa rt 2.
17.3 Definitions
For the purposes of this section, the definitions of Section One of Publication 598-1 apply.
17.4 Classification of luminaires
Luminaires shall be classified in accordance with the provisions of Section Two of Publica-
tion 598-1.
17.5 Marking
The provisions of Section Three of Publication 598-1 apply, together with the requirements of
Sub-clauses 17.5.1 to 17.5.7.
ctions of use, the following information shall be
17.5.1 Where the luminaire design imposes restri
marked on the luminaire:
a) an indication of the "top" of the luminaire;
b) the designed positions or range of angles of use;
c) mounting arrangements (or reference to a document which specifies the mounting arrange-
ments).

17.5.2 Luminaires that are exempt from the requirement of Sub-clause 17.6.1 shall have the following
warning clearly marked on the exterior of the luminaire:
"Isolate luminaire from all poles of the mains supply before opening".
17.5.3 The rated maximum ambient temperature ta shall be clearly marked on the luminaire.
17.5.4 Minimum distances from flammable materials to all exterior surfaces of the luminaire
(to pre-
vent ignition of the flammable material) shall be clearly marked on the luminaire.
17.5.5 Luminaires for certain types of high-pressure discharge lamps shall, where appropriate, be
marked with the following warning against opening immediately after switching off:
"DO NOT OPEN FOR X SECONDS AFTER SWITCHING OFF".
Note. — The value of "X" is determined by the manufacturer (see Sub-clause 17.6.2).
17.5.6 An instruction leaflet shall be supplied with each luminaire and shall include details of exterior
surface temperatures of the luminaire:
a) after 5 min operation;
when steady state is achieved.
b)
17.5.7 The instruction leaflet supplied with the luminaire shall also contain a warning that:
"a) shields (see Sub-clause 17.6.3), lenses or ultraviolet screens shall be changed if they have
become visibly damaged to such an extent that their effectiveness is impaired, for example by
cracks or deep scratches;
b) the lamp shall be changed if it has become damaged or thermally deformed."
17.6 Construction
The provisions of Section Four of Publication 598-1 apply, together with the requirements of
Sub-clauses 17.6.1 to 17.6.6.
17.6.1 The design of the shall be such that it is not possible to inse rt a lamp into a "live"

luminaire. This requirement does not apply, however, to luminaires for lamps

rated at 250 W and below.
17.6.2 The luminaire for ce ain types of high-pressure discharge lamp, where an explosion risk is
rt
declared by the lamp manufacturer. shall incorporate a device to prevent immediate access to the
lamp after switching-off or shall be marked in accordance with the requirements of Sub-
clause 17.5.5.
rtz in
17.6.3 The luminaire shall be fitted with a protective shield to contain the splinters of glass or qua
the event of breakage of the lamp. The shield shall be captive in the luminaire. Openings shall be
made in such a way that parts of an exploded lamp cannot leave the luminaire by a direct path.
Compliance shall be checked by the following test:
Test:
The luminaire is operated at rated wattage in the most onerous position of normal use until
thermal equilibrium is achieved. Five layers of cotton gauze are placed on a wooden base at a
distance of 500 mm below the outer luminaire housing. The lamp is then caused to explode, for
example, for filament lamps, by abruptly increasing the voltage applied to the lamp by about
30%.

If pa s of the lamp drop down, they shall not ignite the cotton gauze. Discolouration and
rt
scorching of the gauze are neglected. The safety of the luminaire shall not be impaired after the lamp
is destroyed.
Note. — If the lamp does not explode owing to the increased voltage, the lamp should be destroyed in a mechanical way while
it is operating.
