Overview

SIST EN 60335-2-60:2003/A1:2005 is a European safety standard issued by CLC that specifically addresses the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, focusing on whirlpool baths and whirlpool spas. This standard supplements general safety regulations by detailing conditions and criteria unique to whirlpool installations used indoors for personal bathing and relaxation. The amendment A1, published in 2005, extends the scope of the original standard to include whirlpool spas alongside whirlpool baths, reflecting advancements and wider application in residential and commercial wellness environments.

Key Topics

  • Scope Expansion: The updated standard covers both whirlpool baths (appliances intended to be drained after use) and whirlpool spas (appliances not intended to be drained after use), both of which feature water circulation or air blowing systems and may incorporate water heating.

  • Safety and Electrical Requirements: Compliance with electrical insulation, overload protection, and moisture resistance criteria is critical-especially in parts supplied at safety extra-low voltage (not exceeding 12 V). Particular emphasis is placed on the prevention of hazards arising from electromagnetic effects and abnormal operating conditions.

  • Mechanical Strength and Cold Conditioning: Whirlpool spas designed for outdoor or unheated environments must pass impact tests after conditioning at −10 °C for 24 hours to ensure durability and user safety.

  • Marking and Instructions: The standard mandates comprehensive user instructions covering water purity maintenance (including pH and chlorine levels), cleaning and disinfection, use of covers, water disposal, and precautions against freezing and extended periods of non-use.

  • Water Quality and Filtration: Whirlpool spas are required to have water filtration systems to maintain water purity, although automatic control of pH values is not mandated. Inspection ensures compliance with water quality maintenance provisions.

  • Temperature Controls: The water inlet temperature for whirlpool baths and spas must not exceed 55 °C, protecting users from scald hazards.

  • Construction Requirements: Conductive liquids may contact live parts only if supplied at safe extra-low voltage, and accessible switches and controls must adhere to this voltage limit to prevent electric shock risks.

Applications

The SIST EN 60335-2-60:2003/A1:2005 standard applies to manufacturers, designers, installers, and safety inspectors involved in:

  • Residential whirlpool bath equipment manufacturing
  • Commercial and wellness spa appliance production
  • Installation and maintenance services ensuring compliance with electrical safety and user guidance
  • Quality assurance and certification bodies evaluating electrical safety of whirlpool apparatus
  • Facility managers overseeing public or private spa environments where water purity and operational safety are paramount

By following this standard, stakeholders ensure enhanced safety, reliable operation, and user protection while leveraging the therapeutic and recreational benefits whirlpool baths and spas provide.

Related Standards

  • EN 60335-1: General safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances; EN 60335-2-60 references this standard for overarching testing and design criteria.
  • IEC 60335-2-60: The international equivalent providing the foundational principles incorporated and amended by the CENELEC version.
  • Local Electrical Installation Codes: As whirlpool baths and spas involve water and electricity interaction, compliance with national wiring and grounding regulations is essential.
  • Water Quality Standards: Guidance on water treatment and chemical usage relevant to maintaining whirlpool bath and spa hygiene and safety.

Following the SIST EN 60335-2-60:2003/A1:2005 standard ensures whirlpool baths and spas meet stringent European safety and performance requirements, contributing to safer household and commercial wet-zone electrical installations.

The article discusses the safety standards outlined in SIST EN 60335-2-60:2003/A1:2005 for electric whirlpool baths used indoors. These safety standards apply to whirlpool baths and spas that are used in households or for similar purposes. The rated voltage for these appliances should not exceed 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances. The standard also covers appliances that circulate air or water in conventional baths. It is important to note that the standard also applies to appliances used in hotels, fitness centers, and similar places, even if they are not intended for normal household use.
