ISO/TC 104/SC 1 - General purpose containers

This document establishes a classification of series 1 freight containers based on external dimensions, and specifies the associated ratings and, where appropriate, the minimum internal and door opening dimensions for certain types of containers. These containers are intended for intercontinental traffic. This document summarizes the external and some of the internal dimensions of series 1 containers. The dimensions of each type of container are defined in the appropriate part of ISO 1496, which is the authoritative document for internal container dimensions.

This document gives the background to the requirements specified in ISO 3874:2017, Annexes A to E.

ISO 3874:2017 specifies the methods of handling and securing series 1 freight containers built and tested to comply with ISO 1496 (all parts). Methods of handling and securing are described for both loaded and empty containers. The conditions for lifting different types of loaded and empty containers are laid down in Clause 6.

ISO 1161:2016 establishes the basic dimensions and the functional and strength requirements of corner and intermediate fittings for series 1 freight containers, i.e. containers which conform to ISO 668 and ISO 1496 (all parts) with the exception of air mode containers (see ISO 8323).

ISO 22915-12:2014 specifies the tests for verifying the stability of industrial variable-reach trucks when handling empty or laden freight containers of 6 m (20 ft) length and longer. It is applicable to these types of industrial variable-reach trucks that are equipped with a spreader (top lift and side lift), swap bodies, or semi-trailers or other load-handling means applicable for container handling. ISO 22915-12:2014 does not specify requirements for industrial variable-reach trucks (see ISO 22915‑11) and rough terrain variable-reach trucks (see ISO 22915‑14). ISO 22915-12:2014 does not apply to trucks when handling a container which has a mobile centre of gravity (see ISO 3874). ISO 22915-12:2014 is not applicable to counterbalanced trucks with masts designed for handling freight containers, dealt with by ISO 22915‑9.

ISO 22915-9:2014 specifies the tests for verifying the stability of counterbalanced trucks with masts when handling empty or laden freight containers of 6 m (20 ft) length and longer. It is applicable to these types of industrial trucks that are equipped with forks, a spreader, (top lift and side lift), or other load handling means applicable for container handling. It does not apply to trucks when handling a container which has a mobile centre of gravity (see ISO 3874).

ISO 22915-16:2014 specifies tests for verifying the stability of pedestrian-propelled trucks. It is applicable to straddle, pallet and platform stacker trucks with capacities not exceeding 1 000kg, with manual or battery-powered lift, scissors lift pallet trucks with lift heights up to 1 000 mm and rated capacity up to 1 000kg, with manual or battery-powered lift, and platform trucks. It also applies to trucks operating under the same conditions when equipped with load-handling attachments. It is not applicable to trucks with retractable devices such as a mast or fork.

ISO 1496-1:2013 specifies the basic specifications and testing requirements for ISO series 1 freight containers of the totally enclosed general purpose types and certain specific purpose types (closed, vented, ventilated or open top) which are suitable for international exchange and for conveyance by road, rail and sea, including interchange between these forms of transport.

ISO 14829 specifies the calculations to be carried out to determine the stability of a straddle carrier. The stability calculations specified in this International Standard are intended to ensure that users of straddle carriers have adequate information about the behaviour of these carriers under various operating conditions. Stability warning and control devices are not covered by this International Standard.

Gives the rationale for the structural test criteria for ISO series 1 freight containers, based on the tests specified in ISO 1496-1.

ISO 22915-5:2014 specifies the tests to verify the stability of single-side-loading trucks with tiltable or non-tiltable mast or fork arms. It is applicable to trucks fitted with fork arms and/or attachments.

ISO 668:2013 establishes a classification of series 1 freight containers based on external dimensions, and specifies the associated ratings and, where appropriate, the minimum internal and door opening dimensions for certain types of containers. These containers are intended for intercontinental traffic. ISO 668:2013 summarizes the external and some of the internal dimensions of series 1 containers. The dimensions of each type of container are defined in the appropriate part of ISO 1496, which is the authoritative document for internal container dimensions.

ISO 22915-15:2013 specifies the tests for verifying the stability of counterbalanced fork-lift trucks with articulating steering and with mast, equipped with fork arms or load-handling attachments. It is not applicable to trucks with retractable devices such as a retractable mast or fork.

Classifies series 1 freight containers based on external dimensions and specifies the assoziated ratings and, where appropriate, the minimum internal and door opening dimensions for certain types of containers.

Adds a final paragraph to subclause 5.2, replaces note 3, replaces the last paragraph of subclause 6.1, replaces the first paragraph of subclause F.3.1, and adds figure F.1.

Amends subclauses 1.1, 5.9.1.1, 6.4.2, B.2.2, F.2.2, table 2 and 3, figure D.1, replaces subclause 5.9.3, title of figures B.3 and B.5.

Amends subclauses 5.7, 5.8.1.1, 6.4.2, F.2.2, table 3, and annex D, replaces table 2, subclauses 5.8.3, B.2.2, and the titles on pages 16 and 18.
