Abstract

This part of IEC 61850 specifies the logical node classes for use in the domain of hydroelectric power stations, steam and gas turbines.
This IEC61850 domain information model standard utilizes the existing Logical Node (LN) classes defined in IEC 61850-7-4, Basic communication structure – Compatible logical node classes and data object classes where possible, while defining new and extended domain specific LN classes to provide the necessary data objects for application to functions and systems in the domain of hydroelectric power stations, steam and gas turbines. The domain information model includes the interface towards a central operator centre’s control functions.
The Scope of this document, related to steam and gas turbine specifics, is limited to overall control functions and generator and turbine control functions. For hydroelectric power, the scope includes the entire power station automation system.
Edition 3 is intended to form a basis for extensions in local implementations. Such extensions may be defined in profiles. Many of the Logical Nodes defined in this document are designed to be suitable for use in domains beyond the scope of hydro power plants and steam and gas turbines. A suggested structure of the Logical Nodes into packages for integration with other domains is provided in Annex G (informative), Migration of this document to the future edition of IEC 61850.

SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026, published by SIST for IEC 61850 power utility automation. It specifies Logical Node (LN) classes for hydroelectric power stations, steam and gas turbines, and the data objects used to model assets, operational functions and management functions. Engineers, integrators and plant operators use it when they need a common information model for these generating plants, including the interface to central operator centre control functions.

What does SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026 specify?

SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026 specifies the LN classes for hydroelectric power stations, steam and gas turbines. It builds on IEC 61850-7-4 where possible, and adds domain-specific LN classes where the existing ones are not enough.

The document covers hydroelectric power stations as a full power station automation model. For steam and gas turbines, the scope is narrower and focuses on overall control plus generator and turbine control functions.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex CDesign concepts for the large power generation model, including links to IEC 61850-7-420 and IEC 61850-7-500 and the large-power-generation-specific concepts
Annex DSupervision of a control task in the bottom layer and model breakdown of a complex system
Annex EModel principles and requirements for operational and maintenance tagouts and restrictions
Annex FPlant modelling, including multiple generating units, reservoirs in series, pumped storage and plant LN design concepts
Annex GMigration of this document to the future edition of IEC 61850
Annex ZANormative references to international publications and their corresponding European publications

The document is organised from scope and references through modelling concepts, asset models, operational and management functions, then the LN catalogue and data semantics. In practice, that structure lets a project team move from plant architecture to actual IEC 61850 objects without switching documents.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026?

SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026 defines how to model large power generation facilities with IEC 61850 LN classes, how to structure the plant into layers, and how to name and use the data objects attached to those LNs. The main requirement is not a single formula or test method, but a consistent information model for plant automation.

Modelling structure and layers

Clause 5 introduces the modelling concepts for large power generation facilities, including stakeholders, information capabilities, profile enabling and a layered model. The model uses top, bottom and intermediate layers. In practice, this matters because it tells you where to place plant-level coordination, equipment-level actuation and the “glue” functions that sit between them.

Clause 5 also explains the interaction mechanisms between layers and between components within a layer. This is the part that helps system integrators decide how a setpoint, measurement or status moves through the automation structure.

Asset models and unit behaviour

Clause 6 defines the large power generation composition model and the unit state diagram. The unit state diagram is an extension of the state model in IEC 60545:2021, and it uses the operational state data object OpSt together with the command data object OpStCtl.

In practice, this gives a common state model for standstill, disconnected, generating, no load and other unit conditions. It also shows how steady states and transition states are represented, so the control system can distinguish between “target state requested” and “target state reached”.

Operational functions

Clause 7 divides operational functions into analogue control and state change. It defines patterns for setpoint handling, setpoint deviation alarm, control setpoint with upper and lower limits, and time targets for state transitions.

For an engineer, this means the document tells you how to model commands such as active power, reactive power, voltage, level or speed control, and how to show whether the actual value has reached the requested setpoint. It is particularly useful when one control function computes a setpoint for another function or when a transition must happen within a target time.

Management functions

Clause 8 defines management functions at joint control level, unit level and machine level, plus hydro device management. Table 10 maps these functions to LN classes such as HJCM, EJCM, HUMC, EUMC, HMMC, EGTM, ESTM and AEMC.

This matters in practice because management LNs decide how requests are prioritised and routed to operational functions. Clause 8 also uses reference data objects such as AstRef, WFunRef and DifWFunRef to link management functions to the assets and operational functions they supervise.

LN catalogue and data naming

Clause 9 specifies the LN classes for assets, management functions, operational functions, supporting functions, monitoring functions, control and supervision, primary equipment, functional blocks, generic function references, non-process interfaces, protections, supervision functions and transducers.

Clause 10 lists deprecated LN classes for backward compatibility only. Clause 11 defines data object name semantics and the enumerated data attribute types used across the model. Clause 12 defines common data classes for analogue settings, controls and DAEnums.

The practical effect is that names, classes and enumerations are standardised across implementations, which reduces custom naming and makes integration, profiling and testing easier to keep aligned.

Tagouts and restrictions

Annex E defines the principles and requirements for operational and maintenance tagouts and restrictions. This is important for plants that need a formal way to model lockout, tagout and similar operational constraints in the IEC 61850 information model.

What terms does SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026 define?

SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026 relies on IEC 61850-2 for terms and definitions, and it also uses many document-specific abbreviations. These are some of the most important ones for practical work:

  • Logical Node (LN) - the basic IEC 61850 modelling element used here for assets, functions and management roles.
  • Operational state (OpSt) - the data object that carries the current steady state of a unit.
  • Operational state control (OpStCtl) - the command data object used to request a state change.
  • Generating mode (GnMod) - the data object that identifies the operating mode while a unit is generating.
  • Generating service (GnSvc) - the data object for special services such as line charging or house load.
  • Asset reference (AstRef) - the reference data object used by management LNs to point to the assets they manage.
  • Joint control for hydro power plant management (HJCM) - the LN for hydro plant-level coordination.
  • Hydro device management (HHDM) - the LN for managing hydro devices such as gates and valves.

Who uses SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026?

SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026 is used by automation engineers, control system integrators and OEMs working on hydroelectric power stations, steam turbines and gas turbines. It is also relevant to utilities and plant operators that need a common IEC 61850 model for control, supervision and interoperability.

In practice, users apply it when they define LN profiles, map plant functions to IEC 61850 objects, specify setpoints and state transitions, or check whether a plant model fits the intended automation architecture. Quality managers and buyers can use it to judge whether a supplier’s model covers the right plant functions and whether the plant uses the same LN structure as other IEC 61850-based systems.

What changed in SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN IEC 61850-7-410:2026 supersedes SIST EN 61850-7-410:2013 and SIST EN 61850-7-410:2013/A1:2016. The foreword identifies this publication as Edition 3, and Annex G provides migration guidance toward the future edition of IEC 61850.
