SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 6909:2026, published by SIST and identical to the European text. It specifies technical safety requirements for press brakes used to work cold metal and similar sheet materials, for the people who design, manufacture, supply and integrate these machines.

What does SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 specify?

SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 specifies how to design and equip press brakes so that significant hazards are reduced for operators and other exposed persons. It applies to intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse, and it also treats the machine as a life-cycle product, from design through instructions.

The scope covers these machine types:

  • hydraulic press brakes
  • hydraulic servo-drive press brakes
  • screw servo-drive press brakes
  • belt-spring servo-drive press brakes

It excludes press brakes with pneumatic beam motion, mechanical clutch machines, and combined technologies such as mixed hydraulic and screw servo-drive designs. It also excludes machines whose main purpose is sheet folding by rotary action, tube and pipe bending by rotary action, roll bending, use in explosive atmospheres, and loading/unloading safety for automatic workpiece handling equipment.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 6909:2026?

SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 requires a risk-based safety design around the tool area, the beam, the controls and the ancillary devices. The document is practical: it does not stop at general principles, but ties the required safeguard to the operating mode, the machine technology and the stopping performance.

  • Clause 4 identifies the main hazard groups and danger zones, with emphasis on crushing and shearing between moving parts, entanglement, ejection of components and release of hydraulic fluids. In practice, this tells the designer what must be controlled first in a risk assessment, especially around the tool area, workpiece handling devices, and drive machinery.

  • Clause 5.2 sets the rules for safeguarding access to moving parts. It covers guards, interlocking guards, ESPE using AOPD, laser actuated AOPD, hold-to-run control, scanner systems, and front, side and rear protection. Annex B gives the separation-distance calculation, Annex C gives the stopping-performance response time, and Annex H gives the tests for laser actuated AOPD. For a designer, this means the position and type of safeguard must match the real stopping time and the direction from which a person can reach the hazard.

  • Clause 5.2.1.5 is especially important for laser actuated AOPD use. It sets the detection-capability and operating conditions for progressive blanking, muting, special box-bending modes, indicator requirements, lockable setting and the 10 mm/s limitation used in certain conditions. In practice, this is the part that governs whether a laser-based safeguard can be used for front access during bending without exposing fingers to the punch-die area.

  • Clause 5.3 requires the control system to perform the safety functions needed for starting, stopping, emergency stop, reset, restart, mode selection, single stroke and monitoring. The document uses safety-related parts of control systems, with performance levels and categories linked to the required safety function. For the reader, this means the control architecture is not left to general engineering judgement - it has to meet the safety function tables.

  • Clause 5.3.7 covers the use of electronic components, including programmable electronic systems (PES) for safety functions. It also addresses access to the NC program. In practice, designers and integrators must ensure that software-based control does not weaken the safety function and that the safety-related logic is validated.

  • Clause 5.4 separates setting mode from production modes, and then distinguishes single cycle with manual load and/or unload from automatic cycle with automatic load and unload. This matters because the permitted safeguards and operator actions change with the operating mode, so the mode selector and related protections must be controlled and clearly understood.

  • Clause 5.5 covers the basic mechanical hazards that are not just about access guarding, including unintended gravity fall of the beam, stability, break-up during operation, tool holder and tool design, access to raised platforms, slips, trips and falls, release of trapped persons, and safeguarding of drives, transmission machinery and ancillary devices. In practice, this is where the machine structure and the moving parts must be made safe, not only the control system.

  • Clause 5.6 covers non-mechanical hazards such as noise, electrical hazards, ergonomics, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, thermal hazards, materials and substances, lasers, high-pressure fluid ejection, isolation and energy dissipation, maintenance and errors of fitting. Annex E gives the noise test code, and Annex G gives the residual-risk markings. This means the machine must be safe to use, maintain and mark, not only safe during the main bending stroke.

  • Clause 6 links the requirements to verification methods. Table 4 shows where visual inspection, performance checks, measurement and drawings/calculations are used for type testing. For buyers and quality managers, this is useful because it tells them which safety features can be checked by documents, which need tests, and which need measured values.

  • Clause 7 requires marking and an instruction handbook. Annex G supplies the residual-risk warnings, and Annex E specifies the noise declaration content. In practice, the machine must tell the user what risks remain and how to operate it safely.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 define?

SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 relies on ISO 12100 for terms and definitions, and it also defines machine-specific terms used throughout the safety requirements.

  • Press brake - a machine intended to transmit energy to the moving part of the tool mainly for bending along straight lines.
  • Tool area - the area between the moving and stationary tools, such as the space between the punch and die.
  • Ancillary device - a device used with the press brake or integrated with it, such as a backgauge or adjustable front sheet support.
  • Electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) - a protective sensing system made up of sensing, monitoring, output switching and data-interface elements.
  • Active opto-electronic protective device (AOPD) - a light-based protective device that detects interruption of emitted optical radiation by an opaque object.
  • Active opto-electronic protective device responsive to diffuse reflection (AOPDDR) - a device that detects diffuse reflection from an object in a defined detection zone.
  • Safety-related part of a control system (SRP/CS) - the part of the control system that performs a safety function from safety input to safety output.
  • Backgauge - the mechanism that moves the backgauge fingers used to position the workpiece before bending.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 6909:2026?

SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 is used by machine manufacturers, safety engineers, integrators, maintenance providers, inspectors, regulators and market-surveillance bodies. It is also relevant to buyers and quality managers who need to check whether a press brake design, safety package or conformity file matches the expected safety approach.

In practice, manufacturers use it for design and type testing, users use it for safe operation and instruction review, and authorities use it for assessment of machine safety claims. It is also useful when a press brake is intended to be integrated into a manufacturing system.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 replaces SIST EN 12622:2010+A1:2014. At European level, it supersedes EN 12622:2009+A1:2013.

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 6909:2026?

Clause 2 names the standards that provide the technical basis for the safety requirements. The most important ones are:

  • ISO 12100 - the general risk-assessment and risk-reduction framework used throughout the document
  • ISO 13849-1 / ISO 13849-2 and IEC 62061 - design and validation of safety-related control systems
  • IEC 60204-1 - electrical equipment of machines
  • IEC 61496-1 / IEC 61496-2 / IEC 61496-3 and IEC 60825-1 - ESPE and laser safety
  • ISO 13850, ISO 13851, ISO 13855, ISO 13857, ISO 14118, ISO 14119, ISO 14120 - emergency stop, two-hand control, safeguard positioning, safety distances, prevention of unexpected start-up, interlocking devices and guards
  • ISO 3744, ISO 3746, ISO 4871, ISO 11202 - noise measurement, declaration and verification
  • ISO 4413 and ISO 4414 - hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • ISO 14122-1 / -2 / -3 and ISO 14738 - access means and workstation dimensions
  • ISO 7010 and EN 1837 - safety signs and integral lighting
  • ISO 11161 - guidance for integration in manufacturing systems

What does the SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 document contain?

SIST EN ISO 6909:2026 contains a hazard list, detailed safeguarding rules, safety-function tables, verification methods, marking requirements and instruction-content requirements. It also includes formula-based annexes for separation distances and response time, plus test procedures for laser actuated AOPD and a noise test code with reporting requirements.

The annexes add practical material for design and testing: Annex B gives the separation-distance calculation, Annex C gives the stopping-performance measurement approach, Annex E defines the noise test conditions and declaration format, and Annex H sets the laser AOPD tests. Annex J is a useful technology map because it shows how the main safety functions are implemented in hydraulic, hydraulic servo-drive, screw servo-drive and belt-spring servo-drive press brakes.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that
this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at

Introduction
This document is a type C standard as stated in ISO 12100:2010.
This document is of relevance, in particular, for the following stakeholder groups representing the market
players with regard to machinery safety:
— machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organizations, market surveillance etc.).
Others can be affected by the level of machinery safety achieved with the means of the document by the
above-mentioned stakeholder groups:
— machine users/employers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— machine users/employees (e.g. trade unions, organizations for people with special needs);
— service providers, for example, for maintenance (small, medium and large enterprises);
— consumers (in the case of machinery intended for use by consumers).
The above-mentioned stakeholder groups have been given the possibility to participate at the drafting
process of this document.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events are
covered are indicated in the Scope of this document.
When requirements of this type-C standard are different from those which are stated in type-A or type-B
standards, the requirements of this type-C standard take precedence over the requirements of the other
standards for machines that have been designed and built according to the requirements of this type-C
standard.

1 Scope
This document specifies technical safety requirements and measures to be adopted by persons undertaking
the design, manufacture and supply of press brakes which are intended to work cold metal or material partly
of cold metal but which can be used in the same way to work other sheet materials (e.g. cardboard, plastic,
rubber, leather) and also referred to as machines.
NOTE 1 The design of a machine includes the study of the machine itself, taking into account all phases of the “life”
of the machine mentioned in ISO 12100:2010, 5.4, and the drafting of the instructions related to all the above phases.
This document covers the following types of machines (see Annex J):
— hydraulic press brakes;
— hydraulic servo-drive press brakes;
— screw servo-drive press brakes;
— belt-spring servo-drive press brakes.
The requirements in this document take account of intended use, as defined in ISO 12100:2010, 3.23, as
