Overview
EN 16575:2014 - Bio-based products - Vocabulary (CEN) is a horizontal European standard that defines common terminology used across the field of bio-based products. It establishes clear, harmonized definitions for terms such as bio-based, bio-based content, bio-based carbon, biomass, biodegradation, life cycle assessment (LCA) and related concepts. The standard focuses on bio-based products other than food, feed and biomass-for-energy applications and supports consistent communication, testing, declaration and regulation across value chains.
Key topics and requirements
- Core definitions: Precise meanings for terms including bio-based, bio-based product, bio-based carbon content, bio-based content, biomass, renewable material, total carbon (TC) and total organic carbon (TOC).
- Measurement context: Notes on methods and approaches (e.g., expressing bio-based carbon as percentage of mass, total carbon or TOC) and reference to specific CEN/TC 411 methods for determination and declaration.
- Environmental concepts: Definitions for life cycle assessment (LCA), durability, degradation and biodegradation to align environmental assessment and reporting.
- Mass balance: Definition and scope of mass balance approaches used when tracking bio-based inputs through production systems.
- Communication guidance: Annex A addresses the use of the prefix “bio” and cautions against ambiguous marketing claims; recommends using accurate terms and reference to standards to prevent consumer confusion.
- Scope limitation: Emphasizes horizontal applicability but excludes areas where product-specific standards exist (food, feed, energy).
Practical applications
- Provides a common language for product developers, manufacturers, regulators and certification bodies involved with bio-based materials, biopolymers, bio-lubricants, biocomposites, adhesives, insulation materials, paper products and chemical intermediates.
- Supports transparent labeling, claims verification and sustainability reporting by harmonizing the terms used in declarations, datasheets and procurement specifications.
- Facilitates consistent LCA and sustainability assessments by ensuring stakeholders use the same terminology and reference points when describing inputs, outputs and impacts.
- Helps standards committees and test laboratories align cross-sector standards and measurement protocols.
Who should use it
- Manufacturers and product designers of bio-based goods
- Certification and conformity assessment bodies
- LCA practitioners and sustainability managers
- Standards developers, policy makers and procurement professionals
- Marketers and legal teams preparing product claims and declarations
