This part of ISO 8528 defines design requirements, minimum performances and type tests for lowpower
generating sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion engines for land and marine use
(domestic, recreational and industrial application), excluding generating sets used on aircraft.
It concerns mainly low-power generating sets driven by reciprocating internal combustion engines for
the generation of single or multiphase alternating current or direct current up to 500 V. The generating
sets are standard manufactured sets.
In this part of ISO 8528, “low-power” is taken to mean rated power of a magnitude up to approximately
10 kW/50 Hz, 12 kW/60 Hz. Low-power generating sets, for the purpose of this International Standard,
are determined by the following special features:
— the users normally are laymen (for further details, see 3.1);
— the complete generating set is usually transportable or mobile;
— the electrical output is connected by means of plugs, sockets and screwed terminal except for extra
low voltages;
— the generating set is ready for use without any additional installation work by the user.
Generating sets for special applications or of higher rated power conforming to the above special
features may, by agreement between manufacturer and customer, be tested in accordance with this
part of ISO 8528. If supplementary stipulations are required for certain applications, this is to be done
taking this part of ISO 8528 as a basis.
This part of ISO 8528 deals with the special requirements of design and test which are observed
in addition to the definitions and requirements laid down in ISO 8528-1, ISO 8528-2, ISO 8528-3,
ISO 8528-4, ISO 8528-5 and ISO 8528-6, where applicable.
This part of ISO 8528 does not deal with safety requirements in order to protect the user from dangers
which are laid down in ISO 8528-13.
NOTE This International Standard does not apply to arc welding equipment (IEC 60974 series).

This International Standard specifies a gravimetric loss-in-mass method for the determination of the
hygroscopic moisture content in analysis samples of copper, lead, zinc, and nickel sulfide concentrates.
The method is applicable to copper, lead, zinc, and nickel sulfide concentrates free from volatile organic
flotation reagents, for example kerosene, and with hygroscopic moisture contents between 0,05 %
(m/m) and 2 % (m/m). The hygroscopic moisture content is used to correct the analysis results from
the equilibrated moisture level to the dry basis.
NOTE The result of the determination of hygroscopic moisture content using this International Standard should
not be reported as part of the analysis of a concentrate sample. Whenever the bulk moisture content of a commercial
shipment of concentrate is required, ISO 10251 should be used. The determination of hygroscopic moisture content
and the determination of bulk moisture content are connected with each other. In both determinations, the same
state of dryness has to be achieved, in order to ascertain the correct metal content of a lot.
This method is not applicable to sulfide concentrates that are susceptible to oxidation (see 6.3, note 2).
Annex A sets out a modified procedure, which can be used for sulfide concentrates that are susceptible
to oxidation.

This part of ISO 9276 provides relevant equations and coherent nomenclatures for the calculation of
moments, mean particle sizes and standard deviations from a given particle size distribution. Two
notation systems in common use are described. One is the method of moments while the second
describes the moment-ratio method. The size distribution may be available as a histogram or as an
analytical function.
The equivalent diameter of a particle of any shape is taken as the size of that particle. Particle shape
factors are not taken into account. It is essential that the measurement technique is stated in the report
in view of the dependency of sizing results of measurement principle. Samples of particles measured are
intended to be representative of the population of particles.
For both notation systems, numerical examples of the calculation of mean particle sizes and standard
deviation from histogram data are presented in an annex.
The accuracy of the mean particle size may be reduced if an incomplete distribution is evaluated. The
accuracy may also be reduced when very limited numbers of size classes are employed.

This part of ISO 13322 is applicable to the analysis of images for the purpose of determining particle
size distributions where the velocity of the particles against the axis of the optical system of the imaging
device is zero. The particles are appropriately dispersed and fixed in the object plane of the instrument.
The field of view may sample the object plane dynamically either by moving the sample support or the
camera provided this can be accomplished without any motion effects on the image. Captured images
can be analysed subsequently.
This part of ISO 13322 concentrates upon the analysis of digital images created from either light or
electron detection systems. It does not address the method of creating the image although the detection
settings chosen together with its calibration are important to particle sizing accuracy. This part of
ISO 13322 considers only image evaluation methods using complete pixel counts.
Both the type of distribution, (by number or by volume) together with the width of the particle size
distribution has a very material influence upon the number of particles to be measured to secure the
desired accuracy within the specified confidence limits. An example is shown in Annex A.
Automation of the analysis is possible in order to measure sufficient particle numbers for a required
degree of precision.
This part of ISO 13322 does not address the sample preparation. However, the sub sampling, dispersion
and presentation of particles to be measured are a vital part of the operational chain of actions necessary
to ensure accuracy and precision of any final result.

This part of ISO 8528 defines measurement methods for the determination of airborne noise emitted by
reciprocating internal combustion engine driven generating sets in such a way that the total of relevant noise
emissions, e.g. exhaust and cooling system noise, together with all other sources of engine noise, are evaluated on
a similar basis to yield comparable results. However, when the exhaust and cooling systems are ducted to a remote
site their noise contribution is not to be included in this part of ISO 8528.
The essential noise emission characteristic value is the sound power level.
The results of measurement taken in accordance with this part of ISO 8528 are classified as either accuracy grade
2 or grade 3 depending on which acoustic measurement conditions are complied with. Accuracy grade 2 (i. e.,
engineering method in accordance with ISO 3744) requires the measuring area to be a substantially acoustic-free
field over a reflecting plane (with an environmental correction K2A < 2 dB) and with negligible background noise
level (background noise correction K1A < 1,3 dB). Accuracy grade 3 (i. e. survey method in accordance with
ISO 3746) requires the environmental correction K2A to be less or equal than 7 dB, and the background noise
correction K1A to be less or equal than 3 dB.
For the operation of a generating set under steady conditions this part of ISO 8528 allows for the calculation of the
A-weighted sound power level as well as appropriate octave or one third octave sound power level for the
appropriate accuracy grade.
This part of ISO 8528 applies to RIC engine driven AC generating sets for fixed and mobile applications with rigid or
flexible mountings. It is applicable for land and marine use, excluding generating sets used on aircraft or to propel
land vehicles and locomotives.
NOTE 1 This part of ISO 8528 has been developed for RIC engine driven AC generating sets, but it can also be applied to RIC
engine driven DC generating sets.
NOTE 2 For some specific applications (e. g. essential hospital supplies, high rise buildings, etc.) supplementary requirements
may be necessary. The provisions of this part of ISO 8528 should be regarded as a basis.
NOTE 3 True comparisons can only be made between generating sets when the measurement are classified in the same
accuracy grade.
